Târgu Mureș is a historic city with many Art Nouveau buildings and the monumental Rose Square as its focal point. There is also a medieval citadel and some interesting museums.
The city was founded in the 14th century as a shekler settlement with the privilege of organizing fairs. It quickly became a significant commercial and cultural center. Its importance increased even more after the construction of a medieval fortress on the bank of Marusza. Today, the restored walls house the Museum of History and Archeology . You can also visit the Reformed Church in the Citadel as well as residential and military buildings.
The biggest attraction of Târgu Mureș is the Rose Square . The most important monuments of the city are concentrated around it, among which the Art Nouveau Palace of Culture with a facade decorated with mosaics is in the first place. Next to it, there is the Mureș County Council with the Prefectural Tower and the Capitoline Wolf statue, symbolizing Romania's ties to ancient Rome.
Among other monuments located in the vicinity of the Rose Square, one can mention the National Theater , the Cathedral of the Ascension , the Annunciation Cathedral , the Church of St. John the Baptist . A bit further, you can visit the beautifully decorated Status Quo Ante Synagogue .
There are also some interesting museums in Târgu Mureș. Besides the Museum of History and Archeology in the citadel, these are the Museum of Ethnography and Folk Art and the Museum of Natural Sciences .
