Kemény Castle
Local name: Castelul Kemény
Kemeny Castle in Brâncoveneşti is one of the most representative and beautiful examples of Renaissance architecture in Transylvania. Its history dates back to the thirteenth century, but the present appearance is the result of the expansion carried out in the sixteenth century during the reign of voivode Ferenc Kende.
The castle was built on a square plan on the remains of Roman fortifications. The courtyard is surrounded by four towers - two larger and two smaller. There is a picturesque stone balcony above the entrance. In the past, the castle was additionally protected by a moat, walls and towers below the plateau on which the building stands, but they were destroyed in the post-war period.
In the second half of the 20th century, the castle served as a correctional facility, and then as a nursing home for disabled women and children. At the end of the 1970s, the property was returned to the Kemeny family, and since 2014 it has been open to the public.
