Sighișoara medieval city
Local name: Sighișoara medieval city
The historical city center was built in the 12th century by Saxon settlers. It has the form of a medieval, fortified town, which has been almost entirely preserved to modern times. In 1999, the center was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
It was here that Vlad the Impaler was born, known as Dracula. Among other things, a medieval festival is organized here every year, during which folk and rock music is presented, as well as art and craft exhibitions.
As a curiosity, it is worth mentioning that until the 20th century, most of the residents of the Old Town were of German descent and spoke German. This found expression in both architecture, clearly modeled on German and in local culture, strongly inspired by German influences. In 1910, over 47% of people living here declared themselves as Germany. Currently, the German minority accounts for less than 2% of the population.
