Small Square

Local name: Piața Mică

The main square in the city was built in 1366, along with the third lane of city fortifications. The square has retained its original appearance from the 15th-16th centuries with minor modifications. All the buildings surrounding it have the status of monuments. They include both residential houses and public utility buildings as well as elements of fortifications.

Currently, the square is divided into two separate parts. On the north and west sides, the buildings were built on a circular plan according to the outline and the first and second lanes of medieval city fortifications. Formerly, it housed many workshops and shops. From the south-east, the square obtained its appearance in the 18th century, when a Roman Catholic church and a parish house were erected here.

Since the Middle Ages, the square was the main place of trade in the city. Fairs were held here, as well as public gatherings and sometimes executions.
