Middelburg is a historic city that has historically benefited greatly from maritime trade. A lot of old buildings surrounding the beautiful medieval market square have survived to this day in its center.
The history of the city dates back to the turn of the 8th and 9th centuries, and the center developed around the abbey founded at that time. Its medieval building with the Jan Lange Abbey Tower, which is one of the tallest in the Netherlands, has survived to this day. 207 stairs lead to its top, and from the terrace you can admire the panorama of the city and the surrounding area.
The period of the greatest development of Middelburg took place in the era of great geographical discoveries and the colonization of new overseas territories. Due to its convenient location at the mouth of the Scheldt to the North Sea, the city became the seat of the East India Company. At that time, many valuable buildings were erected that have survived to this day.
While visiting Middelburg, you can see the old town with a star pattern. In its center there is a large market square with an ornate town hall and the New Church in Middelburg. There are also many historic tenement houses that were inhabited by rich merchants in the past.
Middelburg's main attraction is the Mini Mundi. It is an amusement park, in which there is also a miniature park presenting the most important monuments of the entire region. The Zeeuws Museum is also very popular, with a large collection of handicraft products, including tapestries and items imported from colonial countries.
