Pordenone is a historic town with a well-preserved building in the center. There are several interesting temples here and numerous palaces from different eras that testify to the richness of the past.
The city was founded in the Middle Ages as a port on the river Noncello. It was a center of trade and crafts. From the 13th century it was under the influence of the Habsburgs and until the First World War it changed its nationality many times. Hence, on many houses in the historic center, you can still see polychromes referring to Austrian state symbols.
In the ancient times, there were Roman villas and farms in the area around today's city. Traces of several of them have been discovered during excavations and are open to tourists. However, the main attractions of Pordenone are monuments from the period from the Middle Ages to the late Baroque. In the center, several dozen city palaces have been preserved, which used to be owned by wealthy merchant and noble families. Many of them have nice arcades that now house restaurants and shops.
In addition to them, you can see in Pordenone the 12th century Torre Castle, which was in the past the residence of the Ragogna family. Today it houses the Archaeological Museum, which presents, among others, collections of items from Roman villas from the area. There are also several valuable churches in the Old Town, including the 14th-century St. Mark, the small church of St. Trinity, erected on an octagonal plan and decorated with frescoes inside, and the Church of Our Lady of the Angels hiding numerous paintings.
