Academy Galleries

Local name: Gallerie dell'Accademia

Gallerie dell'Accademia is an art museum presenting mainly works of Venetian and Italian painting from the 14th to the 18th centuries. You can admire the works of such artists as Leonardo da Vinci (famous Vitruvian Man), Gentile Bellini, Giovanni Bellini, Titian, Piero della Francesca or Paolo Veronese.

The museum is housed in a collection of buildings, which include the lateran Canon of the Monastery, the former church of Santa Maria della Carita and the Scuola della Carita. These three buildings were completely rebuilt and reconnected in 1811 (according to Gian Antonia Selvy's project), and were appropriately adapted to the needs of the museum. The collection was first available only in 1870.

Before the museum was opened in 1750, the Venetian Academy of Painters and Sculptors was founded here. After the fall of the Republic of Venice, all valuable works of art were collected, which was to serve the development and training of new artists.
