Imola is a historic city in the greater Bologna agglomeration and home to the famous Formula 1 racing circuit where the San Marino Grand Prix races were held.
The city has a long history which is reflected in its architecture. Here you can see the ruins of the Roman amphitheater and many medieval, renaissance and baroque buildings. The most famous monuments of Imola are the castle Rocca Sforzesca, which houses the international piano acade, and the cathedral of San Cessiano, originally Romanesque, but with a facade and interior rebuilt in the late Baroque style. The central square of the city is surrounded by elegant townhouses, Giacomo Matteotti Square.
At the beginning of the 21st century, one of Imola's greatest attractions was the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari track. In recent years, competitions have not been held there anymore, due to the need to adapt it to higher safety requirements. However, Imola is not only one of the most famous car circuits in the world, but also because one of the greatest F1 drivers, Ayerton Senna, died on it.
