Mausoleum of Theodoric

Located on the outskirts of Ravenna, the mausoleum of the Gothic ruler Theodoric. It was built at the beginning of the 6th century, while he was still alive, and it combines the influences of Roman and barbarian architecture. It is the only building of this type in the world.

The mausoleum consists of three floors. The lowest, designed on a Greek cross plan, houses a burial chamber with a sarcophagus made of a Roman porphyry tub, above there is a round chapel with 11 windows, all covered with a dome made of one limestone block, referring to dolmens built by barbarian peoples.
