Ameglia is a historic medieval town with castle ruins and some interesting monuments from this era. Situated on a hill, the Old Town is a good viewpoint over the surrounding area, including the nearby mountain peaks.
The city is situated between the Ligurian coast and the mountains. For this reason, it is a good starting point for exploring the entire area. It also has a long culinary tradition in which products from the sea are mixed with dishes known from the inland regions.
The greatest heyday of Ameglia took place in the Middle Ages, when the seat of bishops was located here. They built a castle, the ruins of which are now among the greatest attractions of Ameglia. The monastery of the Holy Cross with a well-preserved Romanesque church also comes from the 12th century.
The remains of an ancient cemetery from pre-Roman times have been discovered near Ameglia. They are made available to tourists. You can also see a fragment of a Roman road with an original surface. The Botanical Garden is a big attraction and a place of rest for tourists and residents.
