One of the city's main squares marked out during the formation of its medieval buildings. It underwent a thorough reconstruction in the years 1805-1815 at the behest of its sister Napoleon Bonaparte, who ruled in Lucca at that time. The square received new, neoclassical palace buildings, and its frames were marked by sycamore trees, which grow here today.
