The church, one of the most important monuments of the city, was built in the 11th century on the site of an earlier temple from the 8th century. It is located in the historic center of the city, where the Roman Forum existed in Roman times. It is a structure strongly influenced by the Romanesque style of Pisa. It has a magnificent façade consisting of multi-storey loggias decorated with sculptural decorations. The interior hides valuable carving decorations from the 11th to the 13th century.
