The cavalry square was once the political center of Pisa. It was marked out in the Middle Ages, but the current appearance was given to it by the famous architect Giorgio Vasari in the 16th century. In the center of the square stands a monument to the Grand Duke of Pisa, Cosma Medici. It is surrounded by Renaissance palaces and two churches, including the oratory of St. Rocha and the church of St. Stefan, in which the gilded ceiling has survived.
