Botanical Garden

Local name: Orto Botanico

The botanical garden belongs to the University of Pisa and is considered the oldest in the world. It was founded in 1543 by Cosmas I Medici, and its management was assumed by an outstanding botanist of the time, Luca Ghini.

Currently, the garden covers an area of approximately 3 ha and plants from all over the world grow in it. They are divided into sections of aquatic, tropical plants that are grown in greenhouses, medical plants, herbaceous plants, and ornamental flowers and shrubs. The garden ornaments are Japanese ginkgo and magnolia from around 1700.

In the garden there is a botanical museum with a collection of ancient herbariums, sketches of plants and portraits of famous biologists.
