Singen (Hohentwiel) is one of the larger towns in the Lake Constance area. It is known primarily for the ruins of the fortress standing at the top of the volcanic cone towering over the buildings.
Currently, Singen is primarily a service and industrial center, but due to its location near Lake Constance and the Swiss border, it is also chosen by tourists as a starting point for exploring these picturesque areas.
The Hohentwiel hill towering over the city is a volcanic cone that formed about 7-8 million years ago. Currently, it is 686 m above sea level and is raised over 170 m above the level of the surrounding terrain. For this reason, it is visible from a distance, and at the same time is a good vantage point.
The ruins of Hohentwiel Fortress, which stand on the hill, are Singen's biggest attraction. The castle dates back to the 10th century, and for centuries it was one of the main border fortresses in the region. The castle was demolished at the beginning of the 19th century during the Napoleonic Wars and remains in ruins to this day.
