Schwangau is a tourist destination, known primarily from two royal Bavarian castles, Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. Picturesque alpine landscapes with several mountain lakes and numerous hiking trails add to these extraordinary monuments.

Neuschwanstein Castle and Hohenschwangau Castle were built in the 19th century on the order of the rulers of the Bavarian Wittelsbach dynasty, Prince Maximilian and his son Ludwik called Crazy. They both look like transferred from a fairy tale and attract thousands of tourists every year. The castles are located in the immediate vicinity of the tourist settlement of Hohenschwangau. From here, you can rent horse carriages to Neuschwanstein Castle. There is also a Marie Bridge in the area, which offers a wonderful view of the residence.

The surroundings of Schwangau offer tourists wonderful mountain landscapes. In addition to the rocky mountains covered with forests, the alpine lakes, Alpsee, Swan Lake, Bannwaldsee and the dam Forggenn lake are a charming element of these panoramas. Above Alpsee is the beautifully situated Alpseebad Hohenschwangau beach. Swimming pools and water equipment rentals can be found at Lake Forggen. The Royal Baths near Neuschwanstein castle are also great places to relax.

Alpine peaks rise above Schwangau. Many of them are accessible via walking trails and cable cars. Popular trip destinations include Tegelberg 1707 m and Branderschrofen 1879 m.

The town of Schwangau has nice buildings with historic, picturesque tenements. There is also a baroque pilgrimage church of St. Koloman and church of St. Maria and Florian. The former Alpenrose Hotel with panoramic views of the Alpsee houses the Museum of Bavarian Kings.
