Prien am Chiemsee is a small tourist town with spa values located on the picturesque Lake Chiemsee. The center of the village has nicely preserved historic buildings, and from the marina you can take a boat to the famous islands of Herrenchiemsee and Frauenchiemsee.
Until the nineteenth century, Prien was a quiet commercial town whose inhabitants lived mainly on agriculture and crafts. It was the fashion for a holiday in the mountains that made the town flourish as a popular resort. In the center stands the seventeenth-century Baroque church of the Assumption, whose interior is decorated with frescoes depicting the sea battle of Lepanto. Next to it, you can visit the Museum of Local History.
The narrow-gauge Chiemsee train with historic carriages runs from the center of Prien to the marina. Also further on, you can get to the islands of Lake Chiemsee by the nineteenth century Chiemsee Ludwig Feßler Vane Boat. Most tourists coming to Prien mainly go to Herrenchiemsee and Frauenchiemsee, where the prince's palace and several interesting monasteries are located.
The surroundings of Prien are also very good for active tourism, including hiking and cycling. You can also take advantage of the offer of water equipment rental and go to the lake by kayak or pedal boat.
