HILDESHEIM tourist attractions

Hildesheim is one of the cities that everyone who is interested in historic architecture should visit. Despite the war damage, it is a place where you can see magnificent churches from the Ottonian era and one of the most important monuments of Romanesque art in Germany, Bernward's Door.

The city was founded in the 9th century and immediately became the seat of the bishopric. It is with its functioning that the most important monuments of Hildesheim, St. Mary's Cathedral and the church of St. Michael. The construction of the cathedral took over 200 years and is one of the best examples of Romanesque architecture in Germany. In addition to numerous altars, sculptures and the Bronze Column of Christ cast in 1020, it is equipped with the Bernward Door. They consist of 16 lodgings showing the life of Christ and the story of Adam and Eve. They were a model for casting the Gniezno Door.

The church Michał, who is inscribed on the UNESCO list with the cathedral, represents the top example of the development of Ottonian architecture. On the ceiling of the central nave there is a Romanesque painting from the 13th century. In Hildesheim you can also visit many other historic churches, such as the church of St. Andrew, church of St. Godehard, church of St. Lamberti or the church of St. Magdalene.

The market square surrounded by tenements is the heart of the city. Many of them were rebuilt after the war damage, but they form a beautiful, coherent whole. Some houses were built in half-timbered technique, such as the Knochenhauer-Amtshaus, which now houses the City Museum or the Wedekindhaus with a beautiful wooden facade.

Hildesheim is also a place where tourists can find nice places to walk. One of them is the Magdalena Garden, which is one of the oldest parks in Lower Saxony. Part of it has retained its original Baroque appearance and is decorated with a rosarium. The Wildgatter Wildlife Park is located on the outskirts of the city.
