Grainau is a small alpine village at the foot of the Zugspitze. It is a good starting point for active tourism, and in winter for trips to the nearby ski slopes.
The area around Grainau is extremely picturesque. Rocky, often snow-covered peaks rise here in summer, headed by Zugspitze and Alpspitz. They can both be reached by cable cars, Gondola lift to the Zugspitze and Alpspitzbahn.
The attraction of the village is the AlpspiX observation deck suspended at an altitude of over 2,000 m above sea level. Its ends have no supports and easily protrude over a thousand-meter chasm.
Grainau has the charm of an Alpine village, with wooden houses whose balconies are drowning in flowers, a stone church rising against the mountains and surrounding green meadows. There are also picturesque lakes, Frillensee and Lake Eibsee, which can be reached by walking paths. Above Eibsee there are beaches and water equipment rentals, while Frillensee has a more mountainous, natural character.
