Dießen am Ammersee is a small historic town on an alpine lake. There is a former monastery here, the origins of which date back to the 9th century with the baroque church of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The town has existed since the 13th century, although the local monastery was established in the 9th century. Initially, it was an agricultural settlement that developed into a local commercial and craft center. For centuries, until the secularization of church property at the beginning of the 19th century, the monastery occupied a leading position as a landowner. Currently, there is a hospital in the former monastery buildings.
The most important monument of Dießen am Ammersee and its biggest attraction is the former monastery church, St. Mary's Cathedral. It is a baroque building erected in the 18th century and is one of the best examples of Bavarian Baroque. Its interior is richly decorated with stucco decorations and illusionist paintings.
Around the church and monastery buildings is the well-preserved Old Town with houses from the 18th and 19th centuries. An important attraction is the Ammersee lake, where you can practice water sports or take a cruise on a historic ship.
