Braunfels is a small town dominated by the romantic shape of the castle of the Dukes of Solms. In addition to it, you can see the preserved buildings around the market square, as well as take advantage of the attractions of nature and educational parks.
The fate of the town from the 13th century was inextricably linked with the Braunfels Castle. Initially, the Gothic stronghold was destroyed in the 17th century as a result of the Thirty Years' War and fire. The baroque reconstruction was unsuccessful, and the present shape of the castle is the result of works carried out in the 19th century at the behest of the Dukes of Nassau. The romantic, neo-Gothic castle has over 250 rooms, of which a dozen are now open to the public. They have a rich collection of paintings, mainly Dutch and German from various eras.
Below the castle there is a town with a historic market square and buildings dating mainly from the 18th century. There are picturesque streets and the old urban layout has been preserved, and many bars and cafes are open in the season.
Braunfels also offers activities for those who like to spend time outdoors. Stoffel Park, located on the site of the former quarry, includes walking and educational paths, picnic areas and geological sites. On the other hand, the Wildlife Park in Braunfels allows you to meet animals from the temperate climate zone, living on half-open enclosures.
