Giverny is a small town, whose fame is associated primarily with the name of Claude Monet. One of the most famous Impressionists has lived here for over 40 years and you can follow his footsteps at every step.
In 1883 Claude Monet and his family moved to Giverny. To this day, there is his cozy, somewhat fairy-tale house surrounded by gardens. From the front there is a flower garden, which shimmers with different colors at any time of the year. In the back, however, there is a Water Garden referring to the Far Eastern art of arranging gardens. The house is currently under the care of the Claude Monet Foundation and its interior with original decor and artist souvenirs are made available to tourists.
In 2009, the Giverny Impressionism Museum was opened. It shows the development of this painting current from Monet to artists inspired by the works of the greatest masters. A garden was created around the museum, divided into two completely different parts. The first is an orderly formal garden enclosed in rigid frames, the second is the Crazy Garden full of disorder and lush vegetation, referring to the Monet concept.
The oldest monument of Giverny is the Romanesque church of St. Radegundy. His apse was built in the 11th century. Claude Monet is buried in the church cemetery.
Giverny is located in a picturesque, hills-filled area. A walk through the Coteaux hills allows you to appreciate the value of these areas and admire the panorama of the town.
