The gardens were the inspiration for many works of Claude Monet (1840-1926) - he was particularly fascinated by reflections in the water mirror, as evidenced by the green bridge thrown over an artificial pond. The famous impressionist personally chose the colors and species of flowers in the gardens, and employed seven gardeners to maintain them.
