Museum of Impresionisms Giverny

Local name: Musée des impressionnismes Giverny

The Impressionism Museum in Giverny is an art museum opened in 2009 showing the works of Cloude Monet and the influence he had on contemporary and later artists. The modern building, harmonizing with the landscape, is surrounded by a garden. In addition to the permanent exhibition, the museum also organizes temporary exhibitions.

The name of the museum, although not entirely grammatically correct, has a deep meaning. Its creators wanted to draw the attention of visitors to the multitude of trends under impressionism. Hence the plural in the name. The museum evolved from the Museum of American Art, which has existed here since 1992. It presented the works of American Impressionists, who at Giverny created an artistic colony fascinated by Monet's work.

The main exhibition of the museum shows several original Monet's works and his contemporary works. Some of them are photos showing Monet's house in Giverny and its inhabitants. Temporary exhibitions, in turn, try to show how Monet's work had an impact on other artists.
