Beauvais is treated by many tourists primarily as a transit point due to the low-cost airline airport located here that serves flights to Paris. However, by itself, it also has some interesting attractions, including the tallest Gothic cathedral in France.
The main attraction and most important building of Beauvais is the Gothic catater of St. Peter. The building was never completed and today you can only see the chancel and the transept. The church was to be the pinnacle of medieval technology. The gothic vault was placed here at a height of 48.5 m. However, during the construction, the nave of the temple collapsed, which was never rebuilt. Today, the cathedral in Beauvais is protected against collapse and you can admire the magnificent stained glass windows and sculptural decorations.
Not much has survived to this day of the Old Town around the cathedral. It was destroyed in air raids during World War II. You can see individual half-timbered houses and the medieval Maladerie Saint-Lazare hospital, which now houses a cultural center.
