Sønderborg is a town on the island of Als, close to sandy beaches. There is also a port here, and tourists are mainly attracted by the castle, which dates back to the Middle Ages.
Today's Sønderborg is a famous industrial and scientific center. There are facilities belonging to the University of Southern Denmark and the headquarters of companies from the high tech department. However, there are also interesting monuments and places that testify to a rich history.
The city was founded in the 12th century and the history of the local Sønderborg Castle goes back to those times. It now houses a museum that illustrates the development of art and culture in southern Denmark. You can also visit the Renaissance Chapel of Queen Dorothea, the Great Hall decorated with paintings, and the park surrounding the castle.
Due to its location, Sønderborg has been the object of competition between Germany and Denmark for centuries. It was finally incorporated into Denmark as a result of a plebiscite in 1920. Currently, it houses the German Nordschleswig Museum. One of the oldest houses in the city houses the Ringrider Museum, and Sønderborg's attraction is the modern Dybbøl Banke History Center, close to which you can see the historic Dybbøl windmill.
Its location on the island of Als means that Sønderborg has access to the beaches. The most important of them are the Black Beach and the Fluepapiret Beach. In the season, guarded bathing areas are marked there. In the city, you can also use the Troense marina.
