Makarska is one of the most famous resorts of the Croatian coast and the main tourist center of the Makarska Riviera. Located between the sea and the steep mountains of Biokovo, the village attracts over 100,000 every year. tourists who primarily spend time on the local beaches.
Until the mid-twentieth century, Makarska was only a small town with two historic churches and old buildings centered around them. The construction of the road connecting Split with Dubrovnik meant that this part of the coast was discovered by tourists. Around the old town districts of pensions and hotels were created, and Makarska together with neighboring almost 20 towns became one of the most-visited holiday destinations.
The beaches in Makarska are rocky and relatively narrow. However, they stretch for kilometers along the coast, to which steep slopes of the surrounding mountains descend. This location is conducive to active leisure, including diving, inflatable boats, kayaks and pedal boats, as well as the increasingly popular paragliding flights. Cruises to the nearby islands of Brač and Hvar, where you can get ferries from Makarska, are also a popular attraction.
