Veliki Revelin Tower

Local name: Veliki Revelin

Two gates guard the entrances to the Old Town of Korčula. The one located on the southern side is called the Land Gate (Kopnena Vrata). It was built in 1650 and leads through the Revelin Tower, a monumental tower with a quadrangle plan. However, the entrance from the west called the Sea Gate (Primorska Vrata) leads through a neo-baroque staircase (1907). From the port you enter here along the open loggia from 1584 (now it serves as a local tourist office).

Interestingly, building outside the city walls was prohibited until the 18th century, and the wooden drawbridge was not replaced by a stone one until 1863. The city walls and towers mostly come from the 14th and 15th centuries. On the south side of the old town is the Balbi tower built in 1483 and the Cappelo from 1493. They were part of the fortifications consisting of a total of 12 towers, with which Korčula was surrounded in the Middle Ages.
