Franjevački Samostan Blažene Djevice Marije na nebo uznesene is a Franciscan monastery of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (Virgin). The beginnings of the history of the building date back to the 15th century. The current condition of the building is the result of subsequent renovation of the monastery after the destruction caused by hostile invasions to the island and earthquakes (the largest took place in 1667 and 1962). The congregation is currently very few. The Malacology Museum, colloquially called the Shell Museum, operates in the monastery buildings.
The museum was founded in 1963. Its originator and first director was the theologian and zoologist Dr. Jure Radić. Currently, over 3,000 exhibits are presented at permanent exhibitions. shells of sea mollusks, both contemporary and fossil. The collections are arranged according to where the crustaceans occur and the period from which they originate (from the Triassic to modern times).
In addition to the shells, the monastery has a valuable collection of books, numbering 5 thousand. items, including 24 incunabula and 369 archived Turkish documents.
