Köniz is a city belonging to the Bern agglomeration. The Gurten peak rises above it, with recreational areas and an observation tower.
The city was inhabited since Roman times. During archaeological excavations, the remains of Roman farms were discovered here. An interesting monument of Köniz is the gothic city castle connected with a chapel. A lot of historic houses have also been preserved here, including farms with wooden buildings.
The biggest attraction in Köniz is the Gurten peak. It can be reached via several walking routes, as well as the Gurten Wabern cable car. At the top there is a park on which the miniature Gurten railway runs. There are also recreational areas, picnic areas and the wooden Gurten lookout tower from which you can admire the panorama of Bern and the Bernese Alps.
