Sežana is a small town on the Slovenian-Italian border. It is known for the Lipizzan horse studs located here, established in the second half of the 16th century.

Until the second half of the 19th century, Sežana was a minor village, but its importance grew after the construction of the railway from Vienna to Trieste. After World War I, this area belonged to Italy, which pursued a strict Italianization policy here. Both during World War I and II, heavy fights took place in the area, as recalled by the Tabor Military Museum located in the 16th century watchtower.

Sežana, although small, offers tourists many attractions to visit. The most important of them is the horse stud in Lipica. It has existed since the 16th century and it is the origin of the Lipizzaner horse breed. Horse shows are held on the premises of the stud, and you can also visit it with sleds. There is also the Lipican Museum Lipikum.

A pleasant place for walks in Sežana is the botanical garden with beautiful flower beds, a park layout and greenhouses with tropical plants. In the area of the village there is also the karst cave Vilenica, where excursions were carried out already in the 17th century.
