Postojna is a small town in the Pivka Valley, which tourists visit mainly because of one of the most magnificent European caves. The area is favorable for active tourism and there are many hiking and cycling routes.
For many, the name Postojna is synonymous with the cave. Numbering just over 9 thousand. of residents, the city is primarily a base and accommodation base for arriving tourists. More interesting monuments are in the area, including Predjama Castle, built above another of the many local caves.
The most important attraction of Postojna is the cave with an extremely rich dripstone form. Its corridors are over 27 km long, of which almost 6 are made available as an underground route. Most of it is covered by an electric train. Near the cave entrance is the Vivarij Proteus cave fauna museum.
The vicinity of Postojna is also known for other caves such as Cave Pivka, Otoska Jama, Crna Jama and Planinska Jama. The landscape of these areas is mountainous, largely wooded, and is perfect for not too strenuous hiking.
