Lugoj is a quiet city with a long and turbulent history at first glance. Meanwhile, from the Middle Ages until the 18th century, it was one of the main cities of Banat, a fortified city with numerous trade contacts throughout the region.
The beginnings of the city are related to the settlement activities of King Sigismund of Luxembourg. He issued a town charter in the second half of the 14th century and handed it over to one of the noble families. From the very beginning, it was a thriving craft and trade center, surrounded by defensive walls and fortifications. During the wars with Turkey, it was on the front line many times, and after the peace in Karłowice in 1699, it came under Turkish rule for almost 20 years.
Today, there is not much left of Lugoja's former glory. Within the old town of Lugoj, you can visit the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Cathedral of Pentecost and the tower of St. Nicholas. All buildings have the features of the Baroque and Classicist styles. To learn about the history of the city and the region, you can go to the Museum of History, Ethnography and Fine Arts.
