One of the main city squares was built at the beginning of the 20th century. It is surrounded by historic buildings of various architecture - Baroque, Art Nouveau and the so-called Romanian Renaissance. Among them are two theaters, an opera house and a cathedral. There are also many art galleries as well as cafes and restaurants that set out tables outdoors in summer.
On both sides of the square, there are historic city palaces, mainly from the first half of the 20th century. Weiss, Merbl, Dauerbach, Neuhaus and Lloyd palaces, now housing the Rector's Office of the Polytechnic and a restaurant. In the central part of the square there is a garden with flowers, alleys and benches.
The square also features a fountain, a sculpture dedicated to the victims of the revolution of 1989 and a statue of a she-wolf feeding Romulus and Remus, the legendary founders of Rome. It is a copy of the Roman "Capitoline Wolf". It was a gift given to the city by the inhabitants of Rome as a token of friendship.
