Theresia Bastion

Local name: Bastionul Theresia

The bastion was built in 1732-1734 as part of the defensive wall of the Austro-Hungarian fortress of Timișoara. It is the largest element of the aforementioned fortifications that has survived to modern times and the only surviving bastion in the city.

The bastion has undergone a major renovation in 2008-2010. Currently, it houses a shopping and service arcade and an exhibition space. There are shops, a library, restaurants, bars and a disco. You can also visit two permanent exhibitions of the Banat Museum - an ethnographic open-air museum and the exhibition "Violin - with passion for life".

Originally, the fortress consisted of 9 bastions. In the second half of the 19th century, a large part of the city walls was demolished to make way for the rapidly developing city center.
