Romanian National Opera

Local name: Opera Națională Română

The Romanian National Opera in Timişoara was built in the neo-Renaissance style in 1875. The building owes its present appearance with strongly accentuated neo-Byzantine elements to a major reconstruction carried out in 1920 after a fire that almost completely destroyed the entire building. Only the side wings remained intact at that time.

It was here that the revolution in Romania began, which overthrew the communist regime of Nicolae Ceaușescu. On December 20, 1989, a crowd of 40,000 gathered in the square in front of the opera house, and the revolutionary leaders delivered their speeches from the balcony of the opera house. For this reason, this place has become one of the symbols of the Romanian struggle for freedom.
