South Aegean islands include the southern Aegean without Crete and the Saronic Islands. They are scattered between the coast of Attica and Turkey. The islands are a popular destination for summer recreation, and the most famous are Rhodes, Santorini and Kos.
Rhodes is currently one of the main holiday destinations within the Greek islands. It offers tourists both beautiful beaches, excellent conditions for water sports, as well as wonderful monuments. The most famous beaches include Gennadi, Lardos and Lindos with white buildings, small guest houses and lots of taverns. In Ialyssos, due to the winds blowing here, you can go windsurfing and kitesurfing. The city of Rhodes, entered on the UNESCO list, gives the opportunity to see ancient, Byzantine monuments, as well as the huge Joannite Palace.
Santorini, called Thira by the Greeks is considered one of the most beautiful Greek islands. Its volcanic origin is reminiscent of extinct craters, which are the destination of excursions and hot springs that are a change from sea bathing. There is also the most famous Greek village, Oia, with white buildings and blue domes of churches. In almost all villages you can also see cylindrical windmills with propellers made of canvas.
Kos is in turn famous for its beautiful sandy beaches, many opportunities for water sports and lush nightlife. Its most important resorts include Tigaki, Marmari, Mastichari and Psalidi. In the capital of the island of Kos you can see a Roman villa and the St. John's castle, and in its suburbs there are ruins of the Vault, in which the medical discoveries of Hippocrates were used.
