Fira is the main city of the island of Santorini. It lies on the edge of the volcanic caldera, on a high coastal cliff, and is considered one of the most beautifully situated cities in the Cyclades. Its white buildings look like cut out of a tourist prospectus or postcard, and its view from the glow of the setting sun is considered the most beautiful in all of Greece.
The picturesque location is one of Fira's greatest strengths. The town is not big, but tourists eager to visit it eager for typical views from the Greek islands. In the narrow, winding streets you can find a lot of buildings remembering the Venetian and Turkish times, but it is primarily the white buildings that create the unique atmosphere of the town.
There are several museums in the city, the most important of which are the Museum of Prehistory and the Archaeological Museum. In the first you can see monuments from the Neolithic period as well as ceramics and jewelry from the Minoan era, while in the second you can see a large collection of vases and ancient carvings. In turn, the Megaron Gyzi Museum presents collections of photos of Santorini from the first half of the 20th century, showing the appearance of the island from before the tragic earthquake of 1956.
