Weilburg is a small, historic city that in the past was the seat of one of the branches of the Nassau dynasty on several European thrones. Weilburg Castle surrounded by gardens has survived to this day.
The first mentions of the city appear in the 10th century, when it became the property of the bishops of Worms. In 1225, it fell into the hands of the Nassau dynasty. It was the moment when the rapid development of the center began, and the dukes renovated the badly neglected castle. In the following years, it became the administrative and cultural center of the region.
The most important monument of the city is Weilburg Castle, consisting of the Renaissance upper castle and a baroque residence. Within it, you can see many rooms decorated in the spirit of those epochs and the baroque church of the Castle. The Weilburg Castle Garden, renovated and restored to its original condition, is located at the rear of the building.
One of the historic buildings in the Old Town houses the Mining Museum and the City of Weilburg, which are among the highlights of Weilburg. Here you can learn about the history of the city and the local mining traditions dating back to the medieval times. The city also has a nicely preserved market square and city walls with the Gate Land.
An interesting attraction in the Weilburg area is the Kubacher Crystal Cave. Its name comes from the crystallized calcite that can be seen on the walls and ceiling while exploring the 300-meter underground route. The "Tiergarten Weilburg" Wild Animal Park is also very popular.
