Naumburg (Saale) is a historic town with a preserved medieval urban layout. The local Romanesque-Gothic cathedral is inscribed on the UNESCO list in 2018.
The city was founded in the 10th century and was the seat of bishops almost from its beginnings until the Reformation. It is from the Middle Ages that the local old town comes from with a large market square surrounded by tenement houses and the former bishop's district. Its main element and the most important attraction of Naumburg is the cathedral of St. Peter and Paul. It is a Romanesque-Gothic church on the site of an earlier temple. Two towers in the façade and two other towers added to the nave, at the height of the transept, tower over the buildings. The real treasure is the interior of the cathedral, the interior of which is made up of gothic sculptures and altars created by Master Naumburski and his students.
In the Old Town of Naumburg you can also find many other historic buildings, mainly tenement houses, but also the churches of St. Wenceslas or St. Maurice. Fans of philosophy and history are attracted by the Nietzche House turned into a museum, and the history of the city can be found in the Hohe Lilie City Museum.
On the outskirts of Naumburg there is another important monument of the area, the Saaleck Castle, now turned into a museum and hotel. It is a picturesque building located on a hill. Partly it remains in a state of ruin, and the rest was rebuilt for the needs of the museum and hotel.
