The 120-meter bridge, erected in 1110, is the oldest secular architectural structure in Erfurt. It owes its name to merchant stalls that were built already at the time of the first wooden bridge. Commercial traditions have survived to this day: historic stalls include souvenir shops, works of art, galleries and antique shops.
