Erfurt is a historic city, whose most important attraction is the Gothic cathedral of the Virgin Mary. Despite the war damage, a large part of the medieval buildings with the picturesque Kramarz Bridge have survived here.
The settlement at the strategic ford of the Gera River was founded in the early Middle Ages. Already in the eighth century there was the seat of the bishop and the permanent first cathedral. The present-day appearance of the Erfurt cathedral was achieved thanks to the reconstruction in the 12th and 14th centuries. Together with the neighboring church of St. Sewera creates today one of the most valuable teams of medieval religious architecture in Germany.
The city experienced a period of its greatest prosperity in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Kramarz Bridge, on which colorful tenement houses housing craft workshops, wineries and shops. Its history can be found in the Bridge Museum. The center of the old town of Erfurt is the Fish Market surrounded by historic houses and full of cafes and restaurants.
Next to the old town stands a hill on which the Petersberg Citadel was built in the 17th century. In addition to military buildings, there is also the church of St. Peter, and the walls offer a beautiful view of the Old Town.
Erfurt offers tourists many interesting museums. The most important of them is the Museum of Medieval Art, which presents monuments created during the city's greatest heyday. Places of interest also include the Turin Folklore Museum, the Kulturhof Krönbacken gallery, the Anger Museum, the City Museum, the German Gardening Museum located in the Ega Park, the Doll Museum in Erfurt and the Museum of Natural History.
A good place for a family rest is the Thuringian Zoo, which is one of the largest zoos in Germany. In summer, you can also visit the Maisla Erfurt Maze created in a huge corn field.
