Wartburg Castle was built in the 11th century on a hill over 450 meters high and has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1999. In the castle you can see, among others Martin Luther's room, in which he translated the New Testament from Greek into German, medieval exhibits, a wardrobe made by Dürer and Łukasz Cranach the Elder, the Hall of Singers, or the private rooms of St. Elizabeth. There is an observation deck on the fortification tower. Donkey rides have been prepared for the youngest.
Frederick III the Wise decided to save Martin Luther from persecution and in 1521 faked the death of the reformer, and then hid as a knight Jerzy in the castle.
For years, the castle was a place visited by German personalities, including Wolfram of Eschenbach, Walther von der Vogelweide, Saint. Elizabeth of Thuringia or Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
