The market square has been the main square of Weimar since around 1300. In the past, urban trade was concentrated on a square square measuring 60 by 60 meters. Today, occasional fairs and outdoor events are still held here. The market square is surrounded by tenement houses from various periods. The oldest of them have a Renaissance decor. The square belongs to the Weimar Classic Building Complex on the UNESCO list.
