Badenweiler is a thermal spa known since ancient times and one of the most important in Baden. It is picturesquely situated among forests and has a preserved historic spa park as well as numerous villas and spa facilities from the 19th century.
The ruins of a Roman bath were discovered in the spa park at the end of the 18th century. Currently, they are displayed in a special pavilion that prevents further degradation of the walls. It is also known that there was a large temple in the place where the church was erected in the Middle Ages. However, only small fragments of foundations have survived from it. The present church of St. Paweł comes from the nineteenth century and was built in the neo-Romanesque style. It replaced a medieval building that was in a very bad technical condition.
The main attraction in Badenweiler are the local thermal springs. There is a large swimming pool here, Termy Cassiopeia. They use water with a temperature of 21 degrees Celsius, which can be used for relaxation and healing treatments. It is surrounded by the area of the Spa Park with an arboretum established in the 19th century and the Park of Senses.
As the city has a long history, interesting sights can also be found here. The oldest of them is the Castle of Baden, now in ruins. There are also former villas and guesthouses for patients. In one of them, Antoni Chekhov died in 1904. Today, under the window of his apartment, there is a statue of a seagull, and the writer's bust can be seen on the Castle Hill.
