Frederikshavn is a port and tourist town that served as important military functions in the past. Fortifications from the 19th century and from World War II have survived here. Currently, the area is also known for its nice sandy beaches.
The name of the city comes from King Frederick VI, who ordered the construction of a military port at the beginning of the 19th century in the place of a former fishing settlement. Previously, there were fortifications in the vicinity of these areas, which served to protect the strategic Kattegat Strait. The remains of them is the Powder Tower from the 17th century, which is now available to tourists.
During World War II, the Germans built a system of fortifications in Frederikshavn and its vicinity. Today, its ruins, in the form of bunkers and Bangsbo Fort - Bunker Museum, are an attraction for tourists coming to Frederikshavn.
In the city center you can see some nineteenth-century buildings. There is, among others a neo-gothic church and the North Jutland Coastal Museum located in the former military buildings. There is also the Art Museum in the city.
