Læsø Saltwork

Local name: Læsø Saltsyderi

The traditional salt works are currently purely museum functions. Production was closed in 2004. You can see several reconstructed huts from the Middle Ages, modeled on archaeological excavations dating back to the 12th century. There are demonstrations of traditional salt brewing and workshops for adults and children.

In the summer season, a series of lectures and talks about the history of salt production in the region, traditional methods of work and local curiosities are held here every day. There is also a shop and a buffet with snacks and drinks.

It is worth mentioning that the sea water around Læsø contains only 2% salt, while groundwater contains up to 14%. Therefore, the salt is extracted by evaporating the salt groundwater. As a result, it also contains various minerals that give it its characteristic taste.
