The Gray Lighthouse

Local name: Det Grå Fyr

The lighthouse was built according to the design of the architect Niels Sigfred Nebelong in 1858. It is 46 m high. It was the highest lighthouse in the country until 1952, when the Dueodde lighthouse on the island of Bornholm was put into operation by 1 m. Currently, Det Grå Fyr is still the second highest.

A 210-step spiral staircase leads to the top of the lighthouse, where there is a viewing balcony. From here you can enjoy panoramic views of the area, including the city of Skagen and the Kattegat and Skagerrak straits. Since 2017, a migratory bird center has been operating in the lighthouse, consisting of an observatory and interactive exhibitions.

As a curiosity, it is worth mentioning that this is the second lighthouse built in this place. The previous one was put into use in 1747 as the first brick lighthouse in Denmark.
