Voergaard Castle

Local name: Voergaard Slot

The Renaissance chateau was built between 1481-1590. It is L-shaped and consists of two wings, of which the eastern one is reinforced with two octagonal towers. The reconstructed interiors house an extensive art collection with works by artists such as Francesco Goya, Peter Paul Rubens, Rafael Santi and El Greco.

The castle is surrounded by a moat and can be reached via a brick bridge. It is adjoined by a park that was established in 1768. In the mid-20th century, the park was transformed into a French-style garden. On its premises, you can still see elements of half-timbered buildings dating from the 18th-19th centuries.

Several legends are associated with the castle, including the White Lady who haunts the building at night. What's more, in one of the rooms in the north-eastern tower there is a dark spot that is said to be a trace of a murder committed here long ago. It cannot be lured out by anything, because the blood of an innocent person was spilled then.
