Faaborg is a small, historic town with a long history. One of the most important art museums in Denmark is located here, and the location in front of the archipelago of South Funen islands makes it a good starting point for tourists, especially in summer.
The city was founded in the 13th century and initially developed around the monastery of the Duchak family. Its remnant is the 15th-century, late-Gothic church of the Holy Spirit. The monastery buildings were destroyed during the Reformation. The city center is built up with pretty bourgeois houses, many of which are timber-framed.
One of the most important attractions is the Faaborg Museum. It houses large collections of art from the Middle Ages to the beginning of the 20th century. It has the largest collection of works by painters from Funen in the country. In the city you can also visit the Prison in Faaborg museum and the Faaborg MiniBy miniature park. In the building of the former railway station, the Archipelago Museum has been created in recent years, introducing the realities of life in Funen and the surrounding smaller islands.
